Got earbuds?

Headphone and earphone history

In the 70’s, large headphones were very popular.  In the 1980s, this started to change when portable music players (Sony Walkman) began to hit the market; the size of headphones began to get smaller and more portable. In 2001 Apple introduced the iPod, this device would go on to revolutionise the way we listened to and purchased music forever.  Apple included a pair of funky white ear buds in every package.  This led to a demand for ear buds by music listeners on the run, worldwide.  Today, ear buds are ubiquitous and can be seen in the ears of people of all ages.

The Difference between Earbuds / Earphones and Headphones
The first thing that buyers should understand is the difference between earbuds and headphones. Before smaller and lighter earphones were introduced to consumers, everyone used headphones. Headphones are made up of two small speakers attached to a headband. The headband fits across the top the user’s head, and the speakers rest upon the ear and emit sounds from outside the ear. Early headphones were heavy but over time they became slimmer and more compact. Headphones connect either by wires or Bluetooth to a source such as an audio amplifier, radio, CD players, mobile phones or Mp3 players.

Ear buds, also known as earphones, are designed to fit directly into the ear canal. Their very design assists with noise cancellation. They are small and unobtrusive. With the invention of the iPod, earphones have become a must have accessory in their own right.  Some earbuds are minimalist and designed to be unseen by the public, while others are decorated with custom moulded earpieces, rhinestones and bright colors so that everyone will notice. Earbuds can be a combination of headphone and microphone which allows you to speak on your mobile phone while using them.
Open-Cup and Closed-Cup Headphones

Headphones rest on your outer ears. Some models cover the entire surface of the ear, but don’t entirely seal them. These models are called Supra-aural.  Over the ear models, on the other hand, fully enclose each ear. The biggest advantage with headphones is that they deliver superior sound quality, especially when reproducing bass tones. Headphones can also block out ambient noise, such as that encountered when travelling on airplanes or walking on a busy street. Headphones that seal out ambient noise and prevent others from hearing your music are called “closed cup” headphones.
Open-cup headphones do not seal out external noise and are prone to sound leakage. Open cup models are quite affordable, however, and can be purchased for an average of R 300.00.   Closed-cup models start off pricier, and can run as high as R 5000.00 per pair.  Closed-cup models are expensive because of their top-quality design. An example of closed-cup headphones are the Beats by Dr. Dre, which contain an advanced speaker design, powered amplification, and excellent active-noise cancelling.

Advantages and Disadvantages of Headphones
Headphones aren’t always ideal, users can find them bulky, and not easily portable. For this reason  runners usually choose ear buds rather than headphones. Some headphones can get hot and sweaty too, especially when you are exercising.  Some users find that headphones interfere with their glasses or earrings and messes up their hair.

Advantages and Disadvantages of Earbuds
Earbuds can also rest on the outer ear, the Apple earbuds are a good example of this.  Most are meant to be inserted into the ear canal. Typically, ear buds are less expensive than headphones as well as lighter and less bulky. These features make earbuds extremely portable. Because earbuds sit in the ear canal, they don’t affect hairstyles, or interfere with glasses or earrings.

Unfortunately, earbuds deliver inferior sound quality compared to headphones, especially when it comes to bass tones. Also, they don’t filter out external noise very well, so ear bud wearers tend to crank up the volumes, which can disturb those around them or wreck their own hearing. Some people find earbuds bother their ear canals, too. while other simply can’t wear them because they constantly slip out of their ears.

A brief history of the Promotional Products World

1789 First known promotional products in The United States – commemorative buttons for the election. More than 27 varieties of buttons were produced during George Washington’s term of office.

1875 Industry as we know it began, nurtured by newspaper owners, who (already equipped with printing technology) realised imprinting promotional items would provide additional revenue during slow economic periods. Newspaper owner Jasper Meek is considered the father of promotional merchandise; producing burlap book bags after seeing a school boy drop his books in dust.

1893 At the World’s Columbian Exposition, a promotional venture by H.J. Heinz involving a “Heinz” Pickle Pin led to police intervention to control mass interest from crowds. By the fair’s end over one million of these pins had been given away and some reports claim this venture saved the company from impending financial doom.

1900 By now, the industry was benefiting from technological advances enabling mass production and quality, long-lasting advertising messages. This combined with inspired and informed salespeople and an expanding economy helped spur rapid industry growth.

1904 The first trade association for the Promotional Products Industry was formed, titled the Advertising Manufacturers Association. It is now known as PPAI, or Promotional Products Association International.

1914 First book about the Promotional Products Industry is published, titled Specialty Advertising: The New Way to Build Business by Dr Henry J. Bunting.

1930s During the Great Depression the industry encountered difficulties, but is also acknowledged with helping organisations promote and sell products e.g. imprinted caps promoting Coca Cola and calendars accompanying Wrigley’s Gum.

1940 Business Promotion had a special issue promoting the industry. It noted words of wisdom such as “A good pencil given away as goodwill is much better than a bad cigar and much more lasting . . .”

1945 Introduction of “miracle” material plastic and ball point pens influences the industry, with pens still a common promotional item.

1950s Industry became more sophisticated, establishing a modern distribution and sales system. Manufacturers moved away from internal sales executives, relying on distributors to access the national market. These distributors were lead by Brown & Bigelow, who noted the most successful approach was to identify a client’s marketing problem and provide practical ideas to solve said problem.

1960s Era of political turbulence, combined with the rise of consumerism and the hippie rebellion ensured success of politically charged promotional merchandise. Millions of anti-war and civil rights themed buttons, badges and stickers were produced.

1970s First real explosion in growth of the industry, with corporate organisations solely dedicated to the supply and distribution of promotional items appearing globally. The late 1970s saw the rise of the collector’s boom, where savvy collectors began collecting promotional memorabilia.

1980s Demand for generic product catalogue which distributors could brand as their own and give to corporate clients grew.

1986 APPA, the Australasian Promotional Products Association is created, providing support, education and advice for manufacturers and distributors.

1990s New and more sophisticated catalogue services becoming available. Until now peak season was around Christmas time.

2000s The Creative locker is created, focusing on beverage related promotional items and headwear. TCL moves away from the trends of sourcing from overseas organisations or manufacturing locally by owning and managing a factory in China, combined with office and manufacturing capabilities in Australia.

21st century - Businesses are becoming more inventive in their marketing strategies and are using promotional merchandise through the entire year to promote their brands, products, services and events. The industry in Australia and Worldwide has seen massive growth, which shows little signs of slowing down.

How Promotional Products Compare

The Effectiveness of Promotional Merchandise

Marketing your products can be a tricky proposition. You can use a number of means to advertise your business and to boost overall sales and profits such advertising on television, radio, in the newspaper or online. You need to try to pick up the best advertising strategy for your business to get the desired results. Based on surveys, advertising your business through promotional products is the potentially the best way to advertise and to attract loyal customers to your business.

Nearly 28% of the respondents admitted that they watch all of the TV commercials, 41% have reported they generally see advertisements in newspapers and magazines and only 13% admitted clicking adverts online. The shocking part is that nearly half of the respondents have reported that though they watch most of the TV commercials they hardly pay any attention to them. Online banner ads are found to be the most annoying ads (voted by 73% respondents). Nearly 54% admitted having the same feelings in response to direct mails, 32% to TV, 44% to radio, 13% to magazine ads. The most astonishing finding of this survey is that only 5% of the respondents indicated that they get annoyed by promotional merchandise. This fact alone makes promotional merchandise one of the most likable forms of advertising mediums among the consumers.

The success of promotional merchandise can be attributed to the fact that most of the people (94% in this survey) always remember the businesses that give them these promotional gifts. More than 39% of these people are more likely to go to that business in the future. More than 2/3 of the respondents have admitted that they usually keep these promotional gifts for more than 6 months while 44% of them keep them for more than a year. If the promotional gifts are useful to the users, 54% have reported that they are more likely to approach the business just to get these gifts. Therefore, if you are planning to distribute promotional gifts for your business, you should keep in mind this ‘likeability’ factor.

An amazing fact that came to light is that more than 54% of the respondents have indicated that promotional products have created a terrific impression on them, and they are more likely to buy products and services from the same business in the future too.  As you can clearly see the results are heavily in favour of promotional merchandise, and this survey has proved yet again that getting the best promotional merchandise for your business is probably the most effective way to advertise your products and services
